ONSM members march with thousands of immigrants and allies in Salem, OR to pressure the State Legislature to oppose changes made by Governor Kulongoski’s Executive Order which requires proof of social security status to obtain a driver’s license in the state of Oregon. This order threatens the security of drivers in Oregon who will not have the proper training to obtain a driver’s license nor to purchase automobile insurance. This will limit the immigrant community’s ability to transport themselves to work, school, medical services, and shopping for basic goods.

An ONSM representative makes the connections between atrocities committed by graduates of the School of the Americas and the rise in immigration from Latin America to the United States. The School of the Americas/WHISC is a U.S. Army training school for Latin American military personnel which has been responsible for majority of human rights violations in Latin America over several decades, including assassinations, massacres, acts of torture, and disappearances. The Sanctuary Movement of the 1980’s responded to victims fleeing the wars in Central America perpetrated by graduates of the SOA. Today, the New Sanctuary Movement continues to respond to immigrants displaced by economic and political violence. Click here for more information on the SOA/WHISC.
