As people of faith we have to ask ourselves, how are responding and how does our faith call us to action in the ongoing struggle for justice and immigrant rights? The passage of SB 1070 has brought national attention to the Arizona’s longstanding climate of racial profiling, law enforcement impunity, and criminalization of immigrants and workers. What happens in Arizona will have profound implications all over the country and that the next several months are critical to continuing to build resistance on the local, state, and federal levels.

“The New Sanctuary Movement joins Arizona and the Nation in a National Day of Action against SB 1070 on July 29th“

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 23rd, 2010 - The National New Sanctuary Movement renews its commitment to take a moral and united public stand in support of compassionate, humane and just immigration reform.  Millions of Americans who are members of our religious communities seek answers from us, not only about our nation’s laws, but more importantly, God’s laws.

The passage of SB 1070 has brought national attention to the Arizona’s longstanding climate of racial profiling, law enforcement impunity, and criminalization of immigrants and workers. What happens in Arizona will have profound implications all over the country and the next several months are critical to continuing to build solidarity on the local, state, and federal levels.

 
It is for this reason that members of the New Sanctuary Movement, representing clergy and lay leaders from many faiths and denominations from across the country, condemn Arizona’s SB 1070 and make a call to all people who believe in humanity and justice to participate, by coming to Arizona and/or responding locally through:

-Vigils and solidarity actions

-Taking a public position against SB 1070, and standing in solidarity with Arizona and our local immigrant communities.

-Community education through forums and workshops.

-Seeking commitment from faith communities for non-compliance to SB 1070, including Police-ICE collaboration, Secure Communities and 287g programs, to guarantee a safe space for all people in our places of worship and our communities.

-Creating legislative campaigns in states with similar pending SB1070 legislation.

-Organize to get a city resolution against SB 1070 passed in your local community.

Resistance to this law is a form of solidarity with all God’s children, and the New Sanctuary Movement will be in public witness to reveal the suffering of families under SB 1070 and similar proposed legislation in other states.

We echo the sentiments of Juan Carlos Ruiz, Catholic leader and co-founder of the New Sanctuary Movement, who has promised resistance: “Anything that belittles or debases the human person is an offense and an insult against our God and must be resisted with all the resources of our faith traditions that call us to build a world of compassion, justice and peace.”

Called by the demands of our faith, we insist that our elected leaders pass an immigration reform bill that is humane and just, a bill that ensures family unity and mitigates harsh enforcement provisions, which has worker protections and a rational path to legalization status. And until we have such Immigration reform, we demand the repeal of SB 1070 and all collaboration between local law enforcement and ICE through Secure Communities and 287g programs, and the passage of the DREAM Act.

We are unanimous in our belief that all people, documented and undocumented must be treated humanely and justly.

Over 5,000 people from all over Oregon took to the streets in Portland, OR on May 1st, 2010 to march for immigrant and workers’ rights.

Rev. Carlos Correa Bernier calls for all people to be treated with dignity and to oppose SB 1070 in Arizona, which allows law enforcement to detain anyone suspected of being an undocumented immigrant.  Rev. Correa is a UCC pastor who runs a border immersion program in San Ysidro, CA.
